History

The name Chrisso it emanates from the name [Krisa], the ancient city that was found in the place of current village. Erroneously it is reported in certain maps as Gold (Xrisso in Greek), ignoring him the ancient name. Of course, the double sigma is also error and it emanates from the transport of name in the Greek from maps of foreigner sightseers where for reasons of accent it is written Chrisso.

Chrisso has big history. Ancient [Krisa] was build according to the Hostage the 15th or 14th eg. century. Traces of ruins of walls ancient [Krisas] are saved on to hill Hoop, more southernly from the current place of village. The name of [Krisas] emanates according to the mythology from the name [Krisos], son of [Fokoy], [Aiginitoy], which was installed in Phocis.

In her end of Mycenean period, [Krisa] was from the cities of Phocis that took part in the Pan-Hellenic expedition in Troia. Mr Paparigopoulos supports that his holy Apollo as the all region up to coastal Kirra, belong in [Krisa]. The same opinion has also the English sightseer Oyilliam Martin Lik, which traveler in Phocis at 1806 and it said: "In the ancient years Delphi were one holy in [Krisaia] territory". These in combination with the determination [zathein] that uses the Hostage and means [isothei], they imply that [Krisa] was powerful centre of region.

Under [Krisa], in [katafyto] with olive trees Krisaio Field was found in the antiquity the fabulous Hippodrome Delphi where they were carried out Pythoness, fights with Pan-Hellenic scope and equivalent with the Olympic Fights. Of course Oyilliam Martin Lik claimed that you discover relic of hippodrome. The conduct of Pythonesses strengthens still more the opinion that [Krisa] was a powerful politician, religious and economic centre and a almighty city. In this contributes also the information of [Strabona] that [Metapontio] in down Italy and concretely in the gulf of [Taranta], a city where rich the peak at 700 eg. and it was seat of Pythagorean, it was colony of [Krisas].

Are not known the conditions under which Krisa being in a state of decadence. The archaeological research you do not discover traces of village at the historical years, that is to say from the 8th century eg. and afterwards. Marks of houses exist again at the Byzantine period (from the 4th century and afterwards). The prevailing opinion is that [Krisa] being in a state of decadence because the growth of Kirra at the season of Coper, as they testify the archaeological discoveries, but also the growth of new settlement round his holy Apollo, Delphi. Between these three cities was created acute economic competition. This competition led in all probability to three possibilities: a) in the progressive disappearance of [Krisas] thanks to coastal Kirras, b) in the destruction of [Krisas] from Kirra and g) in the subjugation of their [Krisas] in Delphi. In any case this economic war was also maintained afterwards the decline of [Krisas] up to that the city was destroyed by their Amfiktiones 595 eg. at [A]' Holy War.

At a other opinion in the end of Mycenean of years, [Krisa] was one from the eight Mycenean cities that have been ascertained that they were destroyed by fires. At a opinion this fires are owed in raids of northern populations, or Greek seces of that is to say Dorians at said "[Kathodo] of Dorians", or from foreigner populations as [Illyrioi], without however they leave traces because they left to unknown direction. A other version, supports as cause of decline of city the internal conflicts and agitations that are owed in the palsy of central power because of the long-lasting absence of souvereigns in martial enterprises that contributed in the more general decline of Mycenean culture. Of course exists the certainty that [Krisa] was between the cities that were abandoned finally afterwards their destruction.

When and that the settlement was transported in the current locality he is unknown. Perhaps the current locality of village had been lived by that season after there was found Mycenean cemetery. The region of Saint George can constitute the citadel of city. The information that exists for current Chrisso begins from the 12th century and they are minimal for big periods of Byzantine years, Middle Age and Ottoman domination.

The older information on Chrisso comes from the Byzantine period, from a Jewish sightseer, Veniamin Soledas from Spain, which afterwards 1159 eg. it realised tour in Europe. Thus at his visit in Chrisso, it recorded 200 Jews that cultivated their properties in Parnassos. To the end of 12th century functioned in Chrisso, school where learned the first letters lettered [Leon] Long, the later bishop [Bellas] of Continent, which abandoned Chrisso because of the bad behave of his schoolteacher. The same century the Byzantine Empire suffers the consequences from the Crusades, in one from which participated and the Normen under [Rogiro] [B]', of king of Sicily. In 1147 the last ones, plundering Peloponnese, Evia and the Sterea Hellas, seizing as he is said from Phocis the treasures of Delphi and women of region. That season Chrisso, according to Veniamin Soledas, was rich country.

In 1319 the region devolved to the hands of [Katalanon] while in 1394 the sultan [Bagiazit] [A]' enter in central Greece and thus entire Phocis and the Sterea Hellas found under Turkish possession, 60 years before the capture of Konstantinoupoli (instanbul). At the Ottoman domination in the region became a lot of revolts aiming at the get rid of Turkish balance and Chrisso have it demonstrates enough rebels and thieves that acted in the mountains and in the around villages.

The region of Phocis accepted a lot of destructions and pillages from their turkish-alban. In 1784 the Swedish sightseer Adol Fredrik Sturtrenbecker and in 1805 the English archaelogist Edward Dodwell, they found big number of demolitions churches in Chrisso. The French consul [Mpozoyr] [Felix] which assembled elements for the economic development of Greek space at the decade 1787 - 1797, reports for Chrisso that flourished a substance for dyes, the [prinokokki]. Chrisso that season, found under the administration Turku [Aga] and constituted from 180 houses, appears that was head-village after there it had the seat him Bishop [Salonon] Isaias for more safety and quietness.
